Labour Squeeze Series: Canadian Immigration is Our Strength
This article is part two of our Labour Squeeze Series. Here we talk about ways to make lemonade out of Canada’s growing labour shortage issues.
If you missed part one of the series where we introduce Canada’s labour problem, you can read that here.
The Numbers on Canadian Immigration
Most of us, even on an unconscious level have been aware that we’ve been relying on Canadian immigration to support our economy. As our country becomes more diverse in flavour and culture we’ve seen our workplaces grow equally as diverse. At the last census in 2016, immigrants represented one-fifth (21.9%) of Canada’s total population and were estimated to rise to between 24.5 and 30% by 2036.
In 2021, those born in India were making up the highest percentage of total immigrants at 31%, with China coming in at 7.6%, and the Philippines at 4.4%.
Canada’s real-time model of our population indicates that a new immigrant is added at the rate of one person every 1 minute and 16 seconds. When compared with the current birth rate, one every 1 minute and 25 seconds, we can see how Canada’s growth is going to be driven by immigration - not births.
At Grizzly Force, we’re seeing this growth firsthand. With our 60,000+ labour force using our application to search for flexible or full-time work, a whopping 44% are new Canadian immigrants. They are mainly using Grizzly Force as their first opportunity for work in Canada.
One Grizzly Force user who immigrated recently to Canada from India struggled to find full-time work. When he was onboarded onto Grizzly Force, he worked over 40 jobs gaining a 5-star review from his employers. He was eventually hired full-time by an employer because of his work.
So what barriers are preventing businesses from accessing newly immigrated hires? And how can businesses develop a proactive strategy to access new and diverse labour resources?
